Title: Anime Movies
Post by: Peikko on August 15, 2007, 03:03:53 pm
I don't want to make a new thread, so I'll just post here  :)
I saw this japanese movie (anime?) "Spirited away" last sunday. It was so good and well made, the plot and everything. It didn't have like "Pure evil"-guy or not really the good one either. For example, not like in Lion king; Simba is pure good, saviour of the lion universe jihaa and Scar the ultimate bad ass, killing dads and eating babies.

Well anyway, I cba to explain the plot here, but check it out and you'll be surprised how good it is!  8)

My cousin wrote the English screenplay for Princess Mononoko (spelling perhaps)!

Spirited Away was pretty fun. A bit weird in places...

Princess Mononoke :P

Not really what you might think from the title. Being a Studio Ghibli film it's naturally, pretty good.

Quote from: Wikipedia
It is a jidaigeki (period drama) set in late Muromachi period of Japan, and centers on the struggle between the supernatural guardians of a forest and the humans who need its resources, as seen by the outsider Ashitaka. "Mononoke" (物の怪, "Mononoke"?) is not a name, but a general term in Japanese for a spirit/god/monster of the natural world.

The movie poster.

By the way, the english dub has - randomly - Gillian Anderson voicing that huge wolf you see there.

the shortlist of old-school anime must-sees, according to a casual with no clue about new-school anime:

Ghost in the Shell. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113568/) This may be the best 2d animation movie ever, it certainly is the best to ever come out of Japan. Imho.

Akira. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094625/) Everyone knows this, everyone should see it. It really is very engaging. The manga is top-notch too.

Mononoke Hime. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119698/) Studio Ghibli at its best. And that is very very good. Not quite so oldschool.

Ninja Scroll. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107692/) Oldschool anime-action. You like blood and demons? Look no further.

Grave of the Fireflies. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095327/) Sniff...So sad, so sad.

Yeah.. so there. Go watch.

What Kerathos said! I'd add Howl's Moving Castle to the list too. I really love some of the art in that movie, especially the castle itself of course, which is something special to watch. Pretty magical to watch that film, and to nick that most appropriate of adjectives Kelrathos put to such good use, rather engaging :)

Eva is a great anime. Really is. Some of the concepts at the end are a bit complex to get your head round, but pretty interesting if you take the time to do so. Also worth researching some of the references that are around, what religions/mythology they're from and so forth... there's plenty to learn.

Howl's is very good, I agree, Kawe. It's just so new that I couldn't justify putting it on a list of old-school movies :)

Eva never did it for me, though some of it is quite neat.

If we're talking newer films, I agree that Spirited away is really good (not as good as Princess Mononoke though ;)) and also: Steamboy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0348121/) is really worth watching. Especially if you like steampunk. It didn't get the critics off their asses, but that's because they can't write too well with mini-Myazaki in their collective eating orifices. Anywho, I like it.

Don't EVER flame the Lion King again plix!!! :P

Grish where do you live,I have a copy of Akira with subtitles I can sent you if you want.

shoot a picture while you're there.

BTW to stay a bit on topic; i've seen Akira as well, a bit strange, but a nice movie imo.

Again, not a movie (although there is one), Cowboy Bebop is worth watching. Especially if you like Jazz or Blues; the soundtrack to the series is just fantastic!

Ninja Scrolls, Crying Freeman & The Gyver all awesome. The Gyver has had a screenplay made which is dire mind so careful on the download, it's like a gruesome Power Rangers movie, Crying Freeman is also remade as a screenplay but is very very well done, great action lead called Mark Dacascos as the Freeman.
