Audio Player for windows, suggestions?
« on: January 05, 2011, 12:02:04 pm »
I've been having some difficulties getting a proper audioplayer for my windows 7. I do enjoy my audio, so I have alot of .flac .ogg and other media files.

I have tried most of the audio players available and populair.

Winamp - doesn't play all files (even with plugins, which bug alot tbh!)
Windows Media Player - speaks for itself. Has a horrible media library, and doesn't play all files.
iTunes - Doesn't play .flac on windows.
Spotify - Not a proper media library, doesn't support all audio files either.

That's about it, most populair ones atleast. I had some others, but they all didn't quite seem to cut it.

For the media library, it should be able to sort on Artist, and when you click on the artist, preferably sort on Album, and then on song. The best media library is from Winamp imo, but yeah, it lacks support.

So, any suggestions on which one to use? Or a way to play .flac on iTunes with Windows 7?

Well Kawe, I've tried alot of plugins and addons. But somehow it won't play all my files. Such as direct media rips from albums (m4p, mp4 etc. iTunes files). I could ofcourse convert that.. but that would be such a hassle!

But I'm open for suggestions kawe, if you could point out what Plugin I should use, that would be much appreciated :)

Maybe you need some codecs installed...

Foobar is good for playlists, not so good for playing specific random files from your hd.

I can play anything I want with anything thanks to the K-lite Codec Pack.

try it out http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm

I usually play all my individual files in windows media player classic (included), and for playlists I use windows media player. I don't see why people complain about the media library tbh, works fine for me :P

I think it's the fact that it sits in memory, sucking resources, indexing all your shit.  If you have a lot of shit, it takes a lot of resources. I only have maybe 3-4k songs left (lost most of htem in a hd crash aaaaaaaages ago) but there are ppl with tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of songs.

Those m4p files that won't play in winamp are most likely stuff with proprietry itunes shit involved that'll probably need converting if you want to use it outside of itunes at all. And mp4s, those can be played in winamp without any plugins.

edit* Oh, and you can't play .flac on itunes in windows. You can convert to alac though. It's lossless->lossless, so you won't be losing anything if you later decide to convert back. Or you can just have two copies of the files.

I suppose you're right on the resource part. You can set it not to index your shit though.

Also a lot of the memory problems are caused by some Windows Media thingy that allows you to stream shit on other machines in your LAN, you can turn that off somewhere in the control panel

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes that was the problem Kawe with the iTunes music, and for some reason my Winamp started having lags with the amount of music I used.

I now solved my problems by converting my .flac to .alac, took me about 2 hours with 4 CPU's but it worked! (dBpoweramp if anyone is interested in a proper converting app)

I have recently started using Songbird after having used mainly iTunes for a long time and I find it to be a pretty good music player.
