Looking to buy new laptop + monitor.
« on: October 14, 2009, 12:24:19 am »
Basically I'm planning to buy a new laptop, and a monitor for my home desktop.

I don't really wana spend anything more than 1300£ on a laptop, and I'm not sure of a gaming monitor budget.

My main concern is that buying a gaming laptop will cost me SO much more than an equivalent desktop, and I prefer using desktops, but I need the mobility. (Unless I was to buy a second desktop?!)

My current desktop is already pretty high end, so I don't really want to do to that.

I'm currently looking at monitors between 22-24 inches, and the following laptops.

(sitting at over budet )http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-G71GX-Gaming-Notebook.18560.0.html
http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/Gamer_Xplorer_X5-9900_Notebook/

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-VAIO-AW31S-2-53GHz-X-Black/dp/B002DR4KDG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1255472414&sr=1-3

As you can see from the laptops I'm really confused as to what I want.

Do I get one that can simply play WoW and screw other games(bring xbox360 to uni instead)?
Or do I get a better gaming laptop for games like CoD MW2 and maybe aion etc in the future?

And screen sizes... I could just get an external monitor, and use that most of the time (emulating a desktop) with the new laptop but then have it as a laptop for mobility? (thus allowing me to get a 15inch laptop which is easier than lugging around a 19)

Sorry if what I'm saying seems all over the place but I'm really confused as to what I'm looking for at the moment. I have never had a laptop before, and I much prefer desktops but I can't bring mine from home to uni , as I'm going to and from alot and I like having a gaming comp there...(and my room is pretty small...)

As I said, I think a second desktop is better, but you said you might have space issues or something.

Won't advise on hardware spec -- will let someone else do that :)

The only thing is I have 1 decent desktop so when I move into my own accomadation which would I take ? :|

But that certainly seems more viable. Everybody says 'get a laptop for mobilitiy' so far it hasnt moved from my desk..

The advantage of a laptop is you can take it to lectures, to cafes, etc and do stuff outside of your room.  If you like camping in your room, do that :p

Personally did not take notes with laptop.

But also, better to buy decent desktop @ £800 and a cheap laptop @ £300 :)

Yeah I was thinking that, some notebook or something that isn't particuarly valuable, use it solely for word, excel etc then have a desktop back at base.

The only thing stopping me from doing that is the £700 desktop I have at Poole home.

The thing is if you want to buy a laptop that can handle games well you'll need/want a big screen. Imo laptops are meant to be light and small otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose they are creat for.

If you have ~1300quid to spend get a good desktop for 900+ quid and 10-12inch laptop for 300+quid is a win-win.
