need advice on utp network cable
« on: November 04, 2013, 09:24:24 pm »
I have an internal utp network in my house with a utp wallsocket in each room of the house. Today it suddenly decided to die on me. Basic setup is isp > router modem > 1 short cable to a hub which splits into 6 long cables for the rest of the house.

I noticed that the hub lights weren't blinking so I figured it would be the cable between the modem and the hub, but when I connect that cable directly to my laptop it works fine and so do other cables I tried. However as soon as I put a hub in again it doesn't work. I've tried 3 differents hubs and all ports on the hubs with various cables but nothing seems to work.

I have absolutely no clue what it could be. Anyone have an ideas?

Is the router no longer doing dhcp? Is there an IP conflict?

Not sure, but I doubt it's an IP conflict because if I go over wifi everything is fine.

As for the dhcp, how do I check that?

Let me understand the issue correctly.

You have a modem/router which is also a wifi router that does dhcp ( assigns IP's to all computers on LAN and wifi).
Then you have a cable from the router to a Hub/switch that has no dhcp capabilities.
If you connect to wifi it works fine and if you plug your laptop in to the router directly with a cable it works fine.

Have you tried with other short cables? If you are using simple hubs or switches it really shouldn't matter where you plug them in.

It really sounds odd since you make it sound like something that just happened.

If it is a crossed cable you could get issues with older hubs/switches, but since it already worked before that is not likely.

If the hubs are actually routers that could be an issue, since you could have more than one dhcp assigning ips on the same network.

Nah the hub are simple switches and nothing has been changed in the setup for over a year. On sunday had no issues with internet and monday it wasn't working any more.

Yes the modem/router is also the wifi router.

Tested all the cables and those aren't the problem. Going to test the switches at my neighbors tonight.

Sounds like the hub just died tbh, and they're not really expensive to replace.

Only thing is (if it turns out to be broken), to get a hub again and not another router to avoid an IP conflict the easy way

Not directly related to this but if it's only a short cable between router and switch how come you actually use it instead of going directly into the router or are they taken/lacking ports?

Good point. If you have enough ports in the router, you could just plug them in there.

The router only has 4 ports and I need to split to 7 other utp cable, 8 including the router <-> switch cable.

Anyway problem is solved, it turned out the powersocket in the wall had faulty wiring...
