What would you like to see in a WoW-related website?
« on: November 19, 2007, 06:14:04 pm »
Okay, so I think it's about time I/we (fellow programmers/designers) give something back to the WoW community.

I know Tyler mentioned that he was interested in some kind of WoW-related application, and I'm sure Goza can do some funky stuff too.

So... what would people like to see on a WoW-related website?

Census stats of servers? Players with highest loot level? Some kind of tool for guild management? Pre-fab DKP systems?

Basically, I have the resources to host/design any of the above, so it's more a matter of working out what the community might want.

Pre-fab DKP systems are probably best as we seem to have found a good one at last.

What would raiders like to see? Spec calculators? What's your best spell rotation? (This one's for Daekesh to do...)

We could wrap this all into one nice site, maybe in Elitist Jerks format...

We could have a movies section, and an addons section. Etc., etc.!

So, what does the WoW community want in a website? Really, throw any ideas out there.

Email addresses @theirrealm.com?

Commercial ideas also welcome. A secure character-swapping tool? Doo doo doo...

Think!!

Census stats are kind of already so well covered I think, but a pre-frab DKP sounds good.

An addon that displays the DKP cost of an item using our system in the tooltip would be awesome, and fairly simple I'd have thought since all the info it'd need to deal with is the ilvl and slot.

Email addresses sound good, but would be pretty spammed I'd have thought?

Well there'd be anti-virus/spam stuff in place... web-based email, etc.

Yeah, thought about the DKP-in-tooltip thing. There's already one or two DKP systems that do that I think (and might even be the same as the one we use, or similar...) so we could modify that add-on, no problem.

My old guild has a system similar to this, except a bit more involved.  They have this whole dkp system thing for raids.  At the start the raid leader imports the current dkp into the addon and then everything (except the actual act of looting the item to the player) is automated via whispers and stuff.  At the end the updated dkp information is exported by the addon and fed into the dkp site.  It's really quite good.

By pre-fab dkp system, are you implying that you might host these systems yourself?  Or that you'd just supply/install a system that you've written on somebody elses hosting?  I think the hosting idea could go a long way.  Something similar to WWS, where you could get a guild account.  With that comes dkp system, a small private forum and so on.

And one thing that you really need to focus on (I dread saying this) is synergy.  The site needs to flow well, each part integrated into every other part.  And stuff.  If you have a dkp system, for instance, that would link into some sort of item stats database which would be linked into dps charts and rotation suggestions which is linked into your personal profile that you've uploaded, etc etc.

@ Cwave, not a bad idea at all.

Streaming WoWTV... Not baaaaad! Can have a schedule... and you can push a button when you actually reach a boss and start streaming. With a voice stream too...

Mmm...

@ Daek - yeah, the pre-made guild forum/dkp/hosting thingee already exists, and it sells quite well I think. We'd have to offer something more to the equation tho', through some other funky services.

Combat log evaluation might do it... Or constant updates/other monthly services, yadda yadda.

@ Lego - interviews always good.

I'd love a server-side type of spread sheet so I don't have to bug my self with Microsoft Office crap, most of EJ spreadsheets always lack some data and/or options. I never realised how to add ring enchants to sheet...

That was awesome in Tribes 2.  You could load up the game and look through the eyes of the observing shoutcaster as he broadcast the game.  It was awesome.

Oh yeah. Plox... I hate using MS office etc. if I can at all avoid it. A web-based alternative would be so welcome I'd cry living doves.
