A Clockwork Orange (1971 Stanley Kubrick film)
« on: December 09, 2007, 12:55:36 am »
People said this was really really good.  I just didn't see it.  It was an 'ok' film, but nothing worth ranting and raving about.  Can somebody explain to me exactly what made it so good?

That movie freaks me out. I do not like it.

Not a big fan of really old movies as they usually feel a bit tacky somehow but then again todays movies feel a bit overdone. 90s movies win? ;) dunno really.

I think like quite a few old films, it was awesome/amazing/contentious at the time, but not so much now.

It was about mind control, and portraying things on screen that the public wasn't really comfortable with at the time.

And it IS pretty scary, and brutal.

But yes, like a lot of Kubrick stuff, it's a bit 'Er... I'm not so sure I find that cool or not...', which some people obviously like (having their beliefs/normalities questioned), and some people just find... dull :)
Now I run a tech website.

I suppose.  I don't really care about the message, so I don't enjoy the film.  Oh well :)

What makes this film good is not the message or anything it is an adaptation from a book anyway. It is using violence as a form of art and priming it with classical music which can be called an "elite" form of art. Music is used as a form of narrative. Other than that film has one of the great shots I have ever saw. Camera angles and movements are good and setting is done nicely. It has some nice easter eggs too :)

The environvent,
The idea how the society used to believe that brain washing would help (even castrating people, not in this movie tho),
The brutality,
The acting (Malcolm McDowell),
The fact that the society (34 years later) actually is like this movie. Extreme youth street violence and abuse, etc.

But yeah, if you want a hollywood plot with chicks and explotions - this might not be your favourite movie ;)

Perhaps the film has been dulled because it is so like today - there's no shock there about society being extremely violent when it's an every day occurrence.
