Antichrist (not a spoiler)
« on: May 23, 2009, 06:47:36 pm »

So, the Danish director Lars Von Trier has made a new movie (he made Breaking the Waves, Dogville etc and previously directed Danish porn movies). This time it's a horror movie called Antichrist. Basically it's about a couple who loses their child, and the mother is deeply affected by grief while the father, who is a psychologist, attempts to help her get well again.

The mother (Charlotte Gainsbourg) goes through different stages of grief, and when she comes to the fear stage, the husband (Willem Dafoe) tries to find out what she is afraid of. He discovers that it is the cottage in the woods that they own, so he takes her out there to continue the treatment. The treatment leads to unexpected events, and he manages to boil it down to what the mother really is afraid of...

This is about as far as I can write about the story without spoiling the movie.

I haven't talked to anyone about the movie yet, as I don't know anyone who've seen it yet. I can't really say that I recommend the movie to everyone either, because it's a very very weird movie. It goes far out in areas where traditional movies never goes. It digs deeeeep into thing we don't speak of, and actions we don't want to hear or see anything of. I don't want to spoil it with examples, but be prepared for some strong scenes. However, they don't appear too much throughout the movie.

Personally, I haven't decided whether I love or hate the movie yet. Saying I love it would make me a weird person, while saying I hate it would make me look narrow minded and dumb also. Bottom line, there is a lot to process and I look forward to see other's reactions as well.

It should air in most EU countries within a week or so. Let me know what you think if you decide to go and see it!

Very close-up and detailed gore scenes. Close-up intercourse etc ;)

seems to have gotten a rather crappy response at cannes from what i've read. i also think Von Trier is overrated (but i admit danish movie climate is ALOT more interesting than the swedish at the moment). i feel like i have to see it though but im afraid it will be too much for me.

I have found Von Trier highly overrated for years. Starting with the "dogma" movies.

Only reason I would watch it, would be to have an opinion on the flamewars :)

Overrated or not; he brings the constant thrilling feeling to this movie like he did with 'Riget'. He keeps the tension up with small details, amazing camera techniques (zooms, rolls, focus play etc) and very tender music in the background. Not the Symphony orchestra violin orgies, but in a nice subtle way.

Still can't say I love the movie.. it's more like a room you enter, experience and leave again. Should probably see it again some day to pick up some details in the stuff I'm still wondering about.. the ending and it's meaning for example!

Treach: The thing about the gore is that it's not like Saw 1234 gore where it all ends up looking like a surgery gone bad movie. It's not a whole lot of it, it's not very long scenes (a few seconds), it's just the kind of gore scenes that you, at the most, want to leave up to the imagination or see from far distance.

i dont think it will be too much for me gore-wise. im just afraid that i wont get much out of it except feeling intellectually raped.

i might give this one a go though because it does sound pretty interesting. nice write-up.

It's well shot and acted, but... I found it boring. The film lost me after the first third.

I'm also not a big fan of "interpret this movie yourself, I won't tell you what it's all about". Interesting to read what various critics get out of it, but... yeah, that's their job. To me it was just "meh... whatever".

Also, with almost 2h running time I found it too long.

Yep, it's definitely not for every taste. I'm gonna watch it again this Sunday I think.. I want to get a closer look at the whole religious/cultism part of it.

Lars Von Trier is so overrated, you shouldnt waste too much time trying to see what the positive critics see in it.

I'm not going to watch it again because Von Trier made it, i'm doing it because I wan't to see what more aspects it has to offer..

Hating is for the narrow minded!
