Problem with tanks is that if your tank is bad at something it becomes immeadiately obvious - normally the raid wipes.  If a healer is bad, others can cover.  If a dps is bad, even more to cover.

Its not really like that Matt, though it is obvious that tank sucks if he stands in fire its not really easy to notice small things that really matter in long run, mitigation and avoidance aswell as threat generation are things that You can't compare with other members of raid and notice the issue asap.

Actually, with omen you can compare threat generation rather easily by looking at the amount generated at say, one minute into an encounter. That said, stuff like mitigation (which avoidance is really a part of) is a much more diffuse thing, and will only show up in healers feeling "weaker/busier", and the difference between a tank just surviving that hard-hitting ability right after the huge AoE phase or dying. Proper timing of defensive cooldowns (if a tank has such things, I certainly didn't in vanilla) is also another factor that is harder to measure.

As for covering your fellow raiders asses, this is harder with smaller raidsizes. On two healer encounters, one person is 50% of all healing done and then that last 5% healing output really matters...
